Dear Readers:

Happy Summer!

We hope you are having a wonderful summer filled with sun, fun and plenty of sunscreen!

We are delighted to bring you our summer edition of LCW filled with lots of important health information and timely tips to help you stay healthy while enjoying the sun!

Remember, you are responsible for your health and by taking care of yourself you're investing in your future.

Speaking of sunscreen, it's important to keep yourself completely covered when venturing outdoors. With over two million Americans diagnosed annually with skin cancer, you will want to check out Pennsylvania Specialty Pathology's informative article and checklist of early warning symptoms on page 29.

On July 27th, Chiropractic 1st is sponsoring a free Breast Health talk by nurse (and survivor) Nicole Shaffer. Come out and learn about early detection and other information. RSVP by calling their office at 717-569-5075.

With the high temperatures we're experiencing, it's very important to keep our pets cool and hydrated as well. There's a wonderful article on page 46 by Smoketown Animal Hospital Dr. Andrea Honigmann about being vigilant in avoiding heat stroke for dogs. This information could save your pet's life. Please read it.

Kudos to Lawrence M. George of Life Span Psychological Services for his article on new initiatives for our female veterans. With women making up 15 percent of our military services, it's important they get the medical support they've earned and deserve.

Looking for a fun night that will also benefit our community? On August 6, Clare House is hosting their 10th Annual Jazz Fest at the Marriott at Penn Square. All proceeds benefit homeless women and children at Clare House.

Or check out the information on page 17 and start training now for the Fidelis 5K race in the fall. Proceeds go to The Mix at Arbor Place which does exceptional work with Lancaster's children.

Until next time—have a healthy, happy and cool summer! Don't forget your sunscreen and remember to pray for our troops and their families everywhere.

Blessings!

JoAnn Notargiacomo

For more early detection opportunities, Miriam B. Weiss of Lancaster Gastroenterology Inc. has a great article on page 23 highlighting information about colon cancer. Screening is recommended for anyone over 50, and you can get it done free at LGI.

Suffering from menstrual migraines? Gigi Vargas-Mirabal and Crooked Oak Family Medicine (pg. 24) may offer a solution with a personalized approach to headaches.

Be sure to read over the tip sheet on West Nile Virus, provided by Lancaster Regional Medical Center. With the number of infected mosquitoes on the rise here in Lancaster, it's important to stay informed and be aware!

We are proud to feature Dr. Ellen K. Smith of Red Rose Cardiology as our Woman in the Spotlight. We cannot stress enough the importance of taking care of your heart and we are delighted to highlight Dr. Smith and her work.
